August Beaumont’s world exists within a dimension called the Void. On planet Oura, ancient aliens left behind supernatural technology after the Great Migration.
This technology manifests in two forms. Runes are typically stones that have a glowing symbol in the alien language. When a human absorbs one through close proximity, a rune’s magical ability is permanently stored within. Runes eventually lose their power if given too many times to humans. Abilities are numerous, but some of the most common are elemental, barrier (defensive), and teleportation magic. Use of these abilities must be trained and honed. Overuse results in temporary (or quite rarely, permanent) madness, dissociation, and various other mental ailments. Human practitioners meditate, focus, and train.
The other is in the form of the artifacts. Artifacts are items with magical properties, valuable due to their rarity and history with ancient civilization. Artifacts act as an extension of their wielder, often with one or two powerful abilities acting in tandem. Heavy and robust, nigh indestructible. Like runes, artifacts demand focus — overuse exacts its toll.
The ancient aliens created runes and artifacts to manipulate the world around them, both powered by magice. Magice is a glowing crystal found in deep violet or glass white. Cold, natural, pulsating with energy, it hums with deep resonances from a bygone era. Used to power vehicles and machinery, or embedded in clothing and weapons, they imbue matter with pure power.
Both runes and artifacts were created solely by the ancient aliens. Their manufacture remains a mystery. Humans have devised their own solution: magice weapons — custom-forged blades and firearms embedded with crystal. Less powerful than artifacts, but accessible. Both require mental clarity to wield.
In the Void, both magic and science co-exist. Nature and technology. The former is more favored due to raw power.
Fantasy flora, fauna, and monsters roam the land. Mysterious figures weave their webs. Secrets wait in the dark. A sanctuary for those who seek it. The Void is waiting.
